Cafe Mono – Mission Beach Review

Cafe Mono is nestled among a bustling strip of retail shops and small eateries. It’s new owner John has really fostered a gem in Mission Beach. He took over ownership of this breakfast nook in November of 2011 and I must say, he must be doing something right. John and his staff are extremely attentive and friendly, and he’s quite a coffee artisan. While I did have some drip coffee here and it was excellent, I’m mainly reviewing two of their breakfast items. The Wedge Waffles with strawberries, bananas and fresh home made whip cream and the Barreled Breakfast Burrito with eggs, potatoes, cheddar jack cheese served in a spinach wrap with their home made green salsa!

The waffles were crisp and light, dusted with a bit of powdered sugar, the sliced strawberries and bananas were cut fresh, drizzle a bit of that maple syrup over it, it was amazing. I typically don’t order waffles very often because of the carb/sugar over load, but I felt these waffles were not too sweet or heavy at all. The waffles were an amazing balance of flavor and texture. The home made whip cream was excellent, and I’m not usually a fan of whip cream. I will definitely be back for these golden waffles.

The Barreled Breakfast burrito is stuffed with potatoes, eggs and cheese.  The green sauce, which comes on the side, had the perfect amount of heat, which I gladly welcomed.  It was all that I expected and more. The burrito could have used a bit of salt, but the flavor was great.  The only thing that would put the icing on the cake for this breakfast burrito would be adding some bacon. But then again, doesn’t bacon make everything better?

One minor drawback that I experienced on my visit to Cafe Mono was the amount of flies outside in the seating area. I don’t know what it is about this area in Mission Beach but they are everywhere. Since most of the seating is outside minus one table inside, this is kind of big deal, but it’s summer and when it cools down they should shoo away. Flies aside, I’m certainly looking forward to my next helping of their golden, crispy wedge waffles.
